Être et avoir
Directed by Nicolas Philibert
Synopsis
An observation of the humanity of young people.
The documentary's title translates as "to be and to have", the two auxiliary verbs in the French language. It is about a primary school in the commune of Saint-Étienne-sur-Usson, Puy-de-Dôme, France, the population of which is just over 200. The school has one small class of mixed ages (from four to twelve years), with a dedicated teacher, Georges Lopez, who shows patience and respect for the children as we follow their story through a single school year.

Review by Jordan Smith
A quiet, patient movie about a quiet, patient man. It chronicles the 35th and final year of Georges Lopez's teaching career. He has served 20 of those years in a small rural French town in which he acts as a patron saint of sorts for the children there. It is easy (and perhaps reductive) to distill this movie's essence into any one of its mundane yet profound moments. My personal favorite: Georges takes his entire class (a small group of children from ages 4 to 13) on a field trip to the next school they’ll be attending after graduating. (Only a handful of the children are old enough to graduate each year.) While there, Georges singles out little Jojo who…

Genuine, heartfelt and touching, but if there was one word to describle this film, it would be truthful.
The film isn't trying to be anything it's not, and doesn't bother us with forced message or hamfisted subtexts. The film is simply about a teacher teaching a class of students, and it's up to the viewer to take away from it what they will.
The film is superbly edited, (save for one instance where the camera obtrusively zooms in on a character without any B-roll footage to cut to) and I can't imagine how many clips they must've gone through to get all the intimate moments from the kids. There is so much stuff going on it really is a marvel…

This has a kind of quietness in which you don't realise you're going to cry until you are.

A very lovely and heartwarming documentary that captures the essences of childhood and learning.
Georges Lopez is the kind of teacher kids would be excited to go to school for and I wish I had one like him back then.

C’est la plus belle chose que j’ai vu depuis un bail.Comment filmer l’enfant ?
Je vais essayer de regarder plein de dokus de Nicolas Philibert, ya un mec qui disait que c’était du Wiseman mais en plus sensible. -

Watching this while staying in France in an AirB&B next to a children’s school, hearing their laughter and play wake us up in the morning, was a great experience. The French have a bluntness that gets a bad rap. Here it is presented in the best light as this wonderful teacher helps his students, ranging in age from 4 to 12, find truths about themselves in order to progress as little humans by being as honest and straightforward as he can, without getting frustrated or losing his patience or raising his voice. He is pragmatically warm. And his classroom is beautiful to watch.
